Instructor Weekend
Paddle Time Kayaks will send two instructors for recertification and one candidate instructor for initial certification.
This important course will have us traveling to Maryland/Virginia to the Potomac River. Instructors will immerse in the course curriculum designed by the SEIC Board of Directors with the American Canoe Association and administered by Instructor Trainer Educator, Mike Aronoff, a long-time member and instructor.

Full Strawberry Moon - Guided Paddle
Join us for our first full moon guided paddle since 2022! Always a highlight for us and who ever joins us. Our instructor led Full Moon Paddle accommodates up to 10 people. We paddle back to shore right after the moon rise. For this event we will be back on land shortly after 9pm.

JUNE’S STRAWBERRY MOON
“June’s full Moon—typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer—has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. While strawberries certainly are a reddish-pink color and are roundish in shape, the origin of the name “Strawberry Moon” has nothing to do with the Moon’s hue or appearance, despite the evocative imagery (shown in the artist rendering below). A Moon usually appears reddish when it’s close to the horizon because the light rays must pass through the densest layers of the atmosphere.This “Strawberry Moon” name has been used by Native American Algonquian tribes that live in the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered. The Haida term Berries Ripen Moon reflects this as well. As flowers bloom and early fruit ripens, June is a time of great abundance for many.”

JULY’S BUCK MOON
In July, the Full Moon is the Buck Moon, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, and Wyrt Moon.

AUGUST’S BUCK MOON
The Full Moon in August is named after North America’s largest fish, the sturgeon. Other names for this Full Moon include Grain Moon, Corn Moon, Lynx Moon, and Lightning Moon.

The 2022 Paddle Time Kayaks season ends the last weekend in September or when the weather tells us it’s time.

September: Full Corn Moon
September's full corn moon is so-called because this is when crops are gathered at the end of the summer season. At this time, the Moon appears particularly bright and rises early, letting farmers continue harvesting into the night. This moon is also sometimes named the barley moon, and it is often the nearest full moon to the autumnal equinox, earning the title of 'harvest moon'.

August: Sturgeon Moon
North American fishing tribes called August's full moon the sturgeon moon since the species appeared in number during this month. It's also been called the green corn moon, the grain moon, and the red moon for the reddish hue it often takes on in the summer haze.

July: Buck Moon
Male deer, which shed their antlers every year, begin to regrow them in July, hence the Native American name for July's full moon. Some refer to this moon as the thunder moon, due to the summer storms in this month. Other names include the hay moon, after the July hay harvest.

June: Strawberry Moon
In North America, the harvesting of strawberries in June gives that month's full moon its name. Europeans have dubbed it the rose moon, while other cultures named it the hot moon for the beginning of the summer heat.
2022 High Tide Time Frames
Be sure to check the tide chart prediction and weather forecast before you paddle on any coastal waters.
SHARK RIVER IS TOO SHALLOW AT LOW TIDE FOR MOST ACTIVITIES.
The tidal flow we see in Shark River shifts approximately 1” every 10 minutes! The total shift between high tide to low tide can see the water depth vary by 4-6+ feet, depending on the moon cycle. If that sounds like a lot, you’re right, it is!!
Every summer we see paddle AND motorboats get stuck in the low tide mud, having to wait hours waiting for the tidal waters to flood back in, don’t get stuck in the mud!

Deal Lake Watershed Alliance Kayak Tour
We are excited to be providing kayak rentals for this event sponsored by Deal Lake Watershed Alliance.

When: Saturday May 14, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM (inclement weather date May 15)
Where: Asbury Park Boat Launch near 7-Eleven (1509 Main Street & 7th Ave)
What: Guided paddle tour featuring lake history, fish and wildlife, and an opportunity to learn about the challenges facing Deal Lake, NJ's largest coastal lake.
Why: Deal Lake is beautiful, but we need to realize its health is threatened by climate change and stormwater runoff pollutants. DLWA is working hard to ensure the future health of the lake for years to come.
How: No cost if you bring your own kayak, canoe, or paddleboard, or rent a kayak for a discounted rate.
SRCC Spring Cleanup (LAND)
RIVER CLEANUP ON SATURDAY, APRIL 9
Please join the Shark River Cleanup Coalition in an environmental cleanup of the Shark River Estuary. This is a land based clean up planned at low-tide.
The SRCC, in cooperation with Clean Ocean Action, will be hosting a shoreline cleanup of the Shark River on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
Volunteers are needed to help with setting up, handing out registration forms, and distributing supplies, in addition to participating in the cleanup itself.

WHERE: Meet at Memorial Park in Neptune City
Bring your family and friends to enjoy a great day at the bay while providing community service. Besides helping remove literally tons of litter from our threatened waterways, you help create awareness of our group’s mission and foster a positive impression for the value of saving our Shark River.
Cleanup supplies will be provided. Wear boots or old sneakers.
